Br!NK Br!EFS at the Br!NK New Play Festival

The Br!NK New Play Festival celebrates and develops the work of Midwestern women playwrights. The Renaissance Theaterworks new play festival is unlike a traditional theatrical evening. These staged-readings are focused on the playwright’s work and audience members are encouraged to provide feedback during guided talk-back sessions. Playwrights have the opportunity to meet the actors and directors and mingle with a community passionate about creating and enjoying theatrical works.

Br!NK New Play Festival weekend includes performances of Br!NK Br!efs — a collection of fully-staged 10-minute plays. The festival takes place on May 18 & 19, 2024, at The Baumgartner Center for Dance (128 N Jackson St, Milwaukee, WI 53202).

Ensemble Member Maria Burnham has a play that is part of the BR!NK Br!efs — THE AIR B&B OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS. Playing both days of the festival.

Make/Believe 2023

In May and June, Ghostlight Ensemble will present the fourth installment of its popular Make/Believe play festival for young audience in 2023.

The five short plays by playwrights from Chicago and beyond feature an ant who wishes to explore the world beyond her family’s territory, a grandmother and granddaughter superhero duo, the best slide in the world, a supportive tennis racket and a helpful house spirit. Filled with the power of believing in yourself, new adventures and family bonds, the five stories that make up this year’s festival are filled with characters who face the types of struggles modern children will recognize from their own lives.

Make/Believe is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 27; Sunday, May 28; Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4, at 1:30 p.m. at NorthCenter Town Square (4100 N. Damen Ave., Chicago).

All five plays will be produced on each day of the festival at the NorthCenter Town Square – an outdoor space in the heart of the NorthCenter neighborhood. Some seating will be available, but audience members are encouraged to bring their own chairs and picnics. The show is free, but donations are always appreciated.

The Shadow of a Doubt

As part of its ongoing For Your (Re)Consideration series, Ghostlight Ensemble will present the recently rediscovered play, The Shadow of A Doubt, by novelist Edith Wharton. This is a co-production with the Richard H. Driehaus Museum.

Set at the turn of the twentieth century, The Shadow of a Doubt, explores the issues surrounding social position, remarriage, the roles of women and euthanasia. Replete with Wharton’s trademark wit and skewering of Gilded Age manners, the play centers around nurse Kate Tredennis, who marries John Derwent, a widower of one of Kate’s former patients and friends. Elevated into society through her marriage, Kate is a model wife and stepmother, but she feels uneasy with her new position and faces constant scrutiny for her lowlier background. Soon, her unease is manifested when a man from her past casts suspicion on Kate and accuses her in the first Mrs. Derwent’s death.

More details are available on the show page here.

The Woman of Coulor

For Your (Re)Consideration returns in 2022 with a new stage adaptation of The Woman of Colour, a novel published anonymously in 1808. Written immediately after the abolition of the British Slave trade, the story follows a biracial heiress on her travels from Jamaica to England to marry as a condition of her father’s will. Like the novel, Ghostlight’s staged reading will explore the interconnections of race, gender and class, as well as examining cultural identity and colonial power.

The staged reading takes place at Berger Park Cultural Center (The Downey House) in Edgewater at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2022. Tickets are pay-what-you-will, with an average donation of $10. By donating more, if you are able, you help offset the cost for those who can’t afford to give.
