Make/Believe: A Festival for Young Audiences

Ghostlight Ensemble continues its Nightlight young audiences series with Make/Believe, a curated festival of short plays by playwrights from around the country.

The plays, geared towards children 12 and under, all have one unifying feature – strong female characters.

Works include:

  • Asherella by Lori Taylor

  • Ava’s First Escape Room by Kim Z. Dale

  • Epic Tales From the Lane of Melanin by the FEMelanin collective

  • Little Red Reboot by Sonya Sobieski

  • The Queen of Cocoa Puffs and the Cap’n Crunch King by Corey Pajka

  • Scaredy Friends by Carolyn Minor

  • Snow White, Who is Also Called Becky, No Rebecca…and the Frog Prince by Jack Helbig and Margaret Helbig

Make/Believe is an expansion of our Nightlight young audiences series, which produces original, adapted and forgotten plays geared toward children and the adults who love them.

This show takes place at Laugh Out Loud Theater, 3851 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, IL 60613.

Billy and the Potato Powered Time Machine by Ensemble Member Keith Gatchel and Lawrence Adelson, Alex Chauncy and Nick Davio is part of The Chicago Musical Theatre Festival. Now in its sixth year, the new works festival is produced by Underscore Theatre Company.

Paragon Play Festival

Paragon is Otherworld Theatre’s two-day, short-play festival dedicated to furthering their mission of growing the genre of Science Fiction and Fantasy Theatre through the discovery and promotion of new playwrights and works. This annual event began in 2014 and they have presented 40 new science fiction and fantasy plays over this one-weekend festival every year since.

Ghostlight Ensemble Member Maria Burnham directs The Light Princess as part of the festival. The play features Ensemble Members Miona Lee, Chad Wise and Jean E. Burr, as well as Associate Members Norman J. Burt, Christopher Paul Mueller and Sydney Ray.

Monticello Theatre Association Comedy Showcase

The Monticello Theatre Association (MTA) presents the winners of its short play competition. The eight plays that make up the showcase average about 10 minutes in length and are all comedies. The plays will also be toured throughout the Central Illinois area as part of a year long Take it on the Road program.

The two-night showcase takes place at the MTA Theater (1406 N Market Street, Monticello, IL 61856, Monticello IL 61856).

The Comedy Showcase features the short play Selfie in the Dark written by Ensemble Member Maria Burnham, directed by MTA’s Marisa Winegar.
